How to buy a cell phone off eBay

Since I've had so many questions lately about how I buy cell phones off eBay I thought I'd create this tutorial. I hope it helps!

My husband and I have been buying used phones off eBay for a few years now. It never fails that when you're under the 2 year contract something will happen to your phone at 12 months and 1 day...just outside the 1 year manufacturers warranty. Leaving you with limited options. You can buy another phone in the store for full price (since you're still under contract), use an old phone (if you still have them), or buy off eBay!

The other scenario is that you're under contract but a new phone just hit the market and you HAVE to have it! You can buy a new phone from eBay for a fraction of the cost a retail store will charge you. Here's how (to view a picture in a larger format simply click on the picture itself and it should pull up. Hit the back button to go back):

First you need to click buy
Then scroll down to Cell Phones & Smartphones
Your next option is to select a phone manufacturer, but I would recommend selecting your carrier first. You don't want to fall in love with a phone only to find out the the programming won't work with your cellular provider. If you don't see your carrier in the list click on Select More at the bottom.
I'm going to click on Alltel, because that's my carrier. Most of you know that Verizon has purchased Alltel and taken over Alltel's customers in most areas. That would NOT be true for my area. We primarily have Verizon and Alltel in this community only. If Verizon were to take over Alltel it would become a monopoly here and that's not going to happen, so I've been told. So if I were to buy a Verizon phone for my Alltel service it would NOT work. Verizon has GMA programming and Alltel has CDMA programming. So when looking for a phone, be sure that you see your carrier's logo on the phone itself just to be sure.
This is where the fine tuning process begins. You can further narrow down your search by checking off boxes in features
condition
style
I'm interested in a slider phone. I've tried a qwerty but I just can't get used to it, so I'm going with a number pad instead. I'm choosing against a Smartphone because the plan's are just too pricey for my budget. That leaves me with 260 phones to search through. I don't mind considering a used phone, many times they are well taken care of and the owner got a new phone by signing a new contract. My rule of thumb is to buy used or refurbished for the best price.

That took me down to 229 phones. You have purchasing options from here, Auction or Buy it Now. I prefer the auction because I can get a better price. The Buy it Now prices are what the seller usually has invested in the phone and then some.

That took me down to 155 phones. From here I decide if I want to find something now or if I can wait a few days. I often sort the remaining results to narrow this down further.
My first sort is to look at the auctions ending the soonest so I can see if there is an awesome deal waiting for me to snatch up.
That search didn't reveal what I'm searching for. So I'm going to change my sort criteria to lowest price first. This option requires much more patience, but for many of us half the fun is in the challenge, the pursuit of the perfect deal.
When searching for your perfect phone avoid words like As-Is, for repair, for parts or broken. You want to make sure you read the product description completely so you don't overlook something.
Key things to consider:

  • Make sure the phone has at least a charger to go with it. If the phone you're buying is being used to replace a broken one it's likely that you already have a charger and won't need another one. Keep that in mind. You don't want to buy a phone and find out that you can't charge it!
  • Just because the photo you see is of a new phone does not mean that is your phone. Many times sellers use "Stock" photos to save themselves the time of photographing each and every phone they have to sell.
  • The phone MUST have a clean ESN (electronic serial number)!!! I cannot stress this enough! What this means is that someone may have a balance with Verizon on a phone and left that carrier, also leaving behind a balance. That balance is connected to that phone and can be verified with the ESN. So if the owner of the phone sells it to you with a bad ESN (meaning it's not a phone that's free and clear to use) you will NOT be able to activate the phone without paying the balance!!! If you don't see that the seller has stated that, you need to ask. Don't be a sucker and buy a lemon phone.
  • Also, if the phone description says that the phone is locked, move on and look for another. You will have to take it to the carrier to get it unlocked and often times reprogrammed. Not all carriers will do this. The phone is most likely locked for a reason and you won't be able to use the phone.

After you win a phone be sure to note when you paid the seller and when the item was shipped. You need to be aware of how many shipping days until your package is scheduled to arrive. That way if it takes too long you can contact the seller to get specifics. When your phone arrives first you need to charge it completely to ensure a full battery. Most often the carrier you have will allow you to change out phones from your old one to your new one over the phone or from their website. Alltel will allow you to change it very simply through the website. All you need to activate it is the serial number or HEX number underneath the battery. Very user friendly!

See, it's not too hard! You can do it too!

So tell me, have you ever purchased a cell phone off of eBay before? What was your experience? Did you find this tutorial helpful?

My Cloth Diaper Experiment

When Cohen was 19 months I started Cloth Diapering him. His rear end was raw from disposable diapers and it wasn't getting any better. His Dr. thought maybe he had developed an allergy. We tried Pampers, Huggies, Luvs, Parent's Choice and many more to no avail. I mean really, who would choose to wear a paper type substance up against your butt for months on end. I can without a doubt say that after one month of wearing a pad after child birth that I wouldn't wish that on anyone. Let alone a baby that can't express their discomfort.

So I did the research and dove right in. I found a TON of useful information at DiaperSwappers. When I CD'd Cohen I bought sized diapers, just like disposables, they come in a range of sizes. They didn't last as long as I would have like due to the velcro (called aplix in the diaper community) no longer sticking with extended use. I tried a variety of things. Prefolds with a snappi and a cover (but my cover didn't fit right and it leaked).

AIO (all in one) diapers with PUL (the fancy abbreviation for waterproofing) and pocket diapers. The difference is that AIO's have the absorbant pad attached, either sewn in or snapped in. Here's a great brand called BumGenius.

The pocket diapers have a pocket (opening) in the back for you to stuff the absorbant insert in. This has it's advantages because you can change up the absorbancy based on the needs of your child. Here's another great brand called FuzziBunz.

I don't know why I didn't Cloth Diaper Cutler from the very beginning. I didn't really need much for my 3rd boy so I had people giving me diapers. I used them all up! I was really worried about the startup cost. CD's are expensive! The ones I used with Cohen would not fit Cutler now and wouldn't fit him for a while. Not to mention that I've sold them alll on diaperswappers.com. Since then I've learned of the One Size diaper. They have adjustable snaps on the front of the diaper that allows you to adjust the rise to fit babies from 8-35 lbs. What a genius idea! The most popular OS (one size) diapers are anywhere from $18.00 - $30.00 each! They are nice, but they are just for pooping in. I can't see spending that much on soon to be pooped in diapers!

That is, until I found Kawaii diapers!!! I don't know how they do it at such an affordable price but I want some!!! They have 2 OS varieties, snap and velcro. I was unsure about getting velcro diapers again but I'm not sure Cutler would sit still long enough for me to snap him in, so I picked the velcro OS diapers. They come with 2 inserts!!! YAY!!! Aren't they cute!!!
I'm also ordering a diaper sprayer to clean off the diapers instead of the old school swishing method. Not for me! It needs to be easy and affordable or I'm not getting involved.

Next I'll need to order a wet bag and a pail liner. I don't know why I'm so excited about this! It's just diapers. It's just fun knowing that I'm doing something that's great for my baby and great for the environment. I'm feeling a bit guilty about not doing it sooner. So stay tuned for more to come with my Cloth Diaper Experiment!

Who is HomemadeMom?

 So who is HomemadeMom?

I thought I'd take a moment to tell you more about myself:
  • I'm at attached parent. I keep my children close, I don't let many people babysit them. I babywear in various carriers to keep the bond strong between me and my baby.
  • I'm a mom that yells more than I like, I'd like to be the calm mom that never shouts but that's just not happening. For that reason I'm learning more about positive discipline, so I can be a better mother to my 3 boys. Single Dad Brad is discussing 52 tips/techniques on positive discipline, one each Sunday.
  • I'm highly organized and a bit of a neat freak. In my house everything has a place and NOTHING should be in the floor. I'm a bit anal about it, but I can't stand tripping/stepping on toys. The boys are free to play with whatever they want as long as it isn't in a walkway.
  • I HATE to cook. I don't enjoy it one bit. I do, however, enjoy reading/clipping/storing/organizing recipes. I like the idea that I could create these great meals...one day. Everyday at 4:30 I dread the "what am I going to cook tonight?" production. This is where menu planning would come in handy, but I have to actually do it for it to work.
  • I nursed all 3 of my boys. I wouldn't have it any other way. It is the most natural thing I can imagine. That being said, it's not automatic. Nursing is natural but it takes work. It's not easy starting out and it's different with each child. There is a learning curve to everything new and this is no exception. I feel that nursing allows me to bond with my boys the way a bottle wouldn't. It forces me to stop, sit down and enjoy the experience and enjoy my baby.
  • I co-sleep/bed share with my babies. I feel that it makes nursing during night time hours much more convenient. Therefore I get sleep and baby gets sleep. I used to keep my mouth shut about co-sleeping because the topic seems to be so taboo. Many people view it as something that needs to be "fixed". I disagree. Hannah at Mulberry Spot just recently discussed this exact topic.
  • I cloth diapered my second son for the latter half of his diaper days. It wasn't nearly as difficult as I had imagined. I'd like to do it again with Cutler but the start up cost is holding me back. I realize the benefit of less landfill waste and a cute cotton covered bum!
  • I'm terrible to maintaining a routine with my kiddos. I'm not consistent with bathtime, brushing teeth, bedtime and dinner. The boys take a bath when I think they're dirty, brush their teeth when I remember to remind them (I'm working on this one right now), go to bed when they're tired (usually around 8:30-9:00, but sometimes earlier and often times later), and eat when they're hungry. I really need to work on this.
  • I buy resale and not retail.Which means that you may bump into me perusing the isles of my local Goodwill or Salvation Army. I LOVE a bargain and I'm not afraid to search for one! I find that it teaches my children the value of a dollar. What you can/can't get for a certain amount of money is always relevant. What we save we can spend on fun family adventures.
  • I imagine doing all sorts of fun, creative and crafty things with my boys but my inner neat freak screams out "NO, it will create a mess!!!" Sometimes I win out and we actually do something crafty, but most times I decide it's not worth the neurotic rants that will follow and I leave the messy projects to their school teachers.
  • I have all sorts of ideas that need to be brought to fruition but will take tons of research. I need to learn about obtaining a patent, becoming a non-profit organization and grant writing. It's on my to-do list.
So that's all I can come up with for now. Do you feel like you know be a little bit better now? Do you have a question for me? I'm open to answering anything, no question is too big or too small. I'm just working my way through life trying to make it the best most memorable experience I can, one step at a time!

      Big Boy Seat

Last week when I tried to put Cutler in his car seat to leave work he threw a fit, and I mean A FIT!!! He arched his back and started screaming when I sat him down! I snatched him up out of the seat inspecting it for a thumbtack or something sharp. It sounded like a cry of pain. I didn't see anything there. So I tried it again...same result. He does NOT want to be in his seat! So I carried out his seat in one arm and him in my other arm. When we got to the car I thought I would try it again, but while I was trying to adjust his baby seat I sat him in his brother's "big boy" seat.
It was cold outside so I climbed in to take a pic before moving him back to his baby seat. He looks happy though. After that I decided to get him into a big boy seat and do a little moving around of the seat until I got it just right. I waited a til the weekend for warmer weather and I was able to successfully turn the seat around so it was rear facing. Here's how it looks:
I hate how when a baby falls asleep their head falls over. He looks soooo uncomfortable! Is there a product out there that helps with this?
Well, for now he seems infinitely happier to be in his big boy seat. He's 8 months old today. The time is going by WAY too fast!

      Resolution Revolution Update 1

Ok, so I didn't expect to tackle too many items at once, just one at a time as I can handle it. I really wanted to focus on taking 10,000 steps a day. I don't exercise as I should (not enough hours in the day), you know how it is. So this was a goal. My pedometer is now saying 7763 steps. MAN! 10,000 steps a day is hard! I even mopped the kitchen floor today and dusted the house. I expected to be farther along. Oh well.

I'm interested in starting up a forum for an idea I have, I've researched vBulletin, any advice? At this time I'd like to start up something that's free and easily customizable.

I have another idea involving nursing bras. If anyone out there has any old ones laying around not being used I would be happy to take them off your hands for a project! I'll even pay shipping! Email me!!!

So how are your resolutions coming? Making progress? Care to share?

      Corel Video Studio 2010 WINNER!!!

Congrats to the Domestic Diva!!! Way to go Heather!!!
I realize that I was supposed to giveaway 2 of these, but seeing that the response for this giveaway wasn't what I'd hoped for, I'm extending it by another week for the second package.

Heather, you are going to LOVE it! I hope it works for you for your vlogs. I love watching them, by the way. Share/Bookmark

      Resolution Revolution

I feel that 2010 is a year for changes. I made a few resolutions that I actually intend to keep this time. We all do it. Every new year we start off with such gusto! I'm going to do this, I'm going to do that, and by February most of us have fallen off the wagon. I'm trying to keep the resolution alive! I'd like you all to join me! Grab my button and share with the blogosphere your progress to keep the resolutions you made for 2010. First we are all going to link up and state our new years resolutions. I suggest at least 6, that way you can focus on at least one new topic for 2 months at a time. If you're ambitious (like me) then select 10-12.

Ahem. Well here goes. Time to share.

      1. Walk at least 10,000 steps a day Monday-Friday (I have a new pedometer to help me)
      2. Start Fit Yummy Mummy (I need to get my pre-baby body back) Holly Rigsby is the real deal, this is not a scam. You can follow her on facebook, twitter and she has great videos on youtube.
      3. Blog at least 3 times a week (trying to become a better writer)
      4. Learn and follow attachment parenting techniques (learn/practice positive discipline with the help of Single Dad Brad, he's on twitter too!)
      5. Bi-monthly menu planning (so we eat out less)
      6. Create Home Management Schedule (I learned TONS from Candy!)
      7. Work on following the teachings of Dave Ramsey
      8. Become more involved in La Leche League (in hopes of becoming a consultant)
      9. Work on a prototype for an idea I have for an improvement for a product
      10. Work on a business plan for a non-profit (wishful thinking here)
Phew! That's a lot! Now it's out there for all the world to see. I feel that by doing that I hold myself accountable to myself and others. You all can ask me how I'm doing and I can do the same. We can link up every weekend for a progress report. This system of checking on each other should keep us motivated to succeed in 2010!!! So will you join me?

Getting paid to shop and share

Have you  heard of Dealfer? I had not. Kristina from Dig Communications shared this site with me and I had to share it with you! In her words Dealfer uses a formula of, online shopping, the sharing of URL addresses and social networks in order to make users money. How cool is that! You don't even have to make a purchase! Let's say you're shopping online and come across a great deal, you share it with your friends on your social networking site, if they make a purchase you get a percentage! WHAT?!? You heard me! You get paid from other people shopping what you shared with them. Here's an image that I found helpful, click on it to see it larger.
To read more about how it works click here. They've got a handy toolbar you can install on firefox or internet explorer that makes sharing a breeze. I forgot to mention the stores!!! They have over 800 merchants available that are participating! Is it me or is that just crazy high? Chances are that you are shopping at at least one of these places, so why not share your steal and get paid!

Leave me a comment and let me know if you think this would be something you'd be interested in. I want to hear from you!
